Tips for Decorating a Minimalist-Style Home

There’s a stereotypical tendency humans have to want to keep pace with those we know when it comes to collecting belongings. No one seems to be content with being outdone or left behind. Recently, a new trend has emerged: minimalism. Minimalism thrives on the idea that less is more. So how do you decorate a minimalist-style home?

Prioritize Function
Minimalism tends to mean that you have fewer things (though it doesn’t mean your living conditions have to be austere). Part of the idea behind minimalism is that you don’t have as many things because you focus on the items that matter most to you. One of the things that can help you when it comes to decorating in a minimalist style is choosing pieces that are functional and beautiful. That could mean choosing creative storage options or other multipurpose items.

Select for Quality
Because the items you choose to decorate with should be the ones that matter more to you, it follows that you should want them to be good quality. Part of the reason for this is that they last longer when the quality is high. Additionally, your pieces should do their jobs. This is especially important if you prioritize function when choosing your decorations. Beyond that, items that are of good quality tend to look better than their bargain bin equivalents.

Keep It Simple
Simplicity is key in minimalism. That doesn’t mean that you have to go bare bones with everything, but it does mean that you should avoid cluttering up your space. Clutter is the antithesis of minimalism. It has a negative impact on the appearance of your home, and doesn’t do your mental state any favors either. Keep your surfaces clean and clear. Tone down and pull back on your decor. Choose decor that will stand well on its own without the need for other pieces. Remember, sometimes the best way for statement pieces to make a statement is for them to stand alone.

Just because “less is more” happens to be a theme for minimalism, doesn’t mean that you can’t have a beautifully decorated home. It just means that the way you decorate it will be different from how you would approach other styles. Remember, you can always turn to the internet for inspiration if you aren’t sure how to proceed. Isn’t that why you’re here anyway?
