The Benefits of Adding a Detached Garage to Your Property

Despite their ubiquity, garages are a relatively new addition to housing. They only came around out of a need to store a vehicle, and even then, once vehicles became more affordable and accessible to the public at large. Today, it’s uncommon to see a house without a garage attached to it. Whether or not you have an attached garage, it’s still worth considering adding a detached garage to your property.

Greater Flexibility

The fact that a detached garage is separated from the home itself allows you a greater degree of flexibility in regards to the actual garage. The size, location, and position in relation to the home can all be determined with the way you would need to be if it were attached to the space. This is especially great if you want to have a larger garage but have a house that is relatively small in proportion, as it allows you to avoid having a house that is overshadowed by the garage.

Separation

Sometimes having some space between your garage and your home can be really nice. It’s a toss up as to which is noisier at any given point: the home or the garage. If you use your garage space as a place to work on projects, you might enjoy the space and relative peace that some extra distance affords. Conversely, those in the home may enjoy some relative peace and quiet themselves if your projects lend themselves to greater levels of noise. You may also find that you have greater freedom to convert the space into anything else you might like, from a home gym, to a separate living space, to vehicle and storage.

Safety

If you’re like most homeowners, you probably store all sorts of things in your garage. It’s not uncommon for garages to become a sort of catch-all space for various belongings and miscellaneous items. While there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with this, you may want to think twice before storing certain things in an attached garage. Things like propane tanks, spray cans, and paint can be highly flammable, to say nothing of the noxious fumes they may contain and give off. Keeping flammable substances and those that can give off harmful fumes further away from your house can make your home safer.

As it turns out, the benefits of adding a detached garage to your property may be worth it more than not. If you want greater flexibility, more separation between your garage and your home, or even just a greater degree of safety, adding a detached garage can offer just that. Once you know what you want, all that’s left is to figure out where to put it.
